Power on both sides of the coil is normal. Check your relays in the engine harness (there should be 3, one is the main, one is for the o2 heater, and one is for the fuel pump. Have you had any of these removed? If so, make sure you haven't switched any (they will plug in the socket but won't work). I bought a 1989 325 that wouldn't start. Everything checked OK but I had no spark. Come to find out the previous owner had switched the relays thinking it would fix it. As soon as I found this & switched them back I had spark & the engine runs like a champ.

Good Luck

I need as much help as I can on this car. It was given to me as a gift so that I could fix it and give it to my daughter. It is a 84 325e with a rebuilt engine,I am having a very difficult time with the wiring and even though I have a Bently I still can't seen to figure it out. Is there anyone with experience in troubleshooting electrical systems on these cars please email me and I will reply with a phone # to make contact.

One quick question, should the ignition coil have power on both of the terminals? This seems a little strange to me.
