starting problems 94 325is (archive)

i hope someone has some ideas concerming the following.
my son has a 94 325is coupe, 64,000 miles excellent shape.
in the last couple of days he has been having problems starting it and in fact needed to be jumped last evening.
he added an aux power amp to his system 6 weeks ago and i am wondering if in fact he has affected his electrical system.
a: could he have damaged his alternator and it is now no longer holding a charge sufficeient to start the car?
b: could the battery be the issue?
if it is the alternator what are we talking $$$ to fix?
any and all thoughts will be greatly appreciated.
