Specific Gravity is pretty easy to check. You can buy a hygrometer from WalMart for a couple of bucks, suck water from each battery cell, one at a time into the hygrometer. The number of balls that float give you an idea of charge. If all the cells are about equal, then your sons amp is sucking too many amps or the alternator is not doing it's job. If one cell is a lot lower than the rest, chances are your battery is a goner. If your son introduced a short in the wiring, you could also be continually draining your battery to ground. It may be the battery was on it's last legs and the increased drain pushed it over the edge. Good luck.
