Hey guys,
Is it simple enough to install a new tie rod yourself, with normal tools? Also, what do you recomend for a new tie rod? Are they all the same, or are some better than others?
Thanks
Tim

Tim,
Tie rods are not difficult to replace. Simply remove the outer end from the strut assembly, then undo and remove the rubber boot off the steering rack. Turn the wheel toward the side you are working on and you will then see where the tie rod threads into the rack. Large flats are in the rod to aid in unscrewing BUT you must first bend the washer off the flats- it acts as a safety lock to prevent it from unintentionally coming loose. The washers are quite heavy and will take a big punch / hammer to knock back straight up. Sometimes they are difficult to get access to hit due to there position. From there you just reverse the process to install. I replaced the TRW ones on my '86 with genuine BMW as they are about $40 apiece from Hendrick BMW mail order.Probably wise to order the self locking nuts and that washer on the rack end of the rod while you are at it.

I HAVE TIE RODS FROM AN 88 AND A 90 IN GOOD CONDITION IF INTERESTED E MAIL OR CALL 978-475-7094. USE A TIE ROD TOOL TO REMOVE THE OR A C CLAMP AL
