Car dies when starting it cold (archive)

whenever i start my car and the engine is cold it will die unless i sit there for about 2 or 3 min and give it gas for a sec then release. if i give it gas aned hold it it will rev up for a second then it will fall and die unless i release, then give it gas again. what are the common things that could cause this on my 84 318i? I was just wonder this before i start going don the list in the bentley.
