Hmm...you know I did have the cruise control on, but I've never noticed a spastic speedometer. The rpm's are a different story, the needle doesn't sweep in a smooth fashion when I'm accelerating. But the surging and cutting out to me feel like it's got a poor tune up on it. I guess I better take a hard look at it again. Thanks for the help!

Okay I drove on the highway today for about 45 minutes and the surging got way worse than before. About 70mph, it cuts out pretty badly, and this mind you, is after a new cap, rotor and plugs. The only thing I haven't done is the 02 sensor and the plug wires. Well, and a filter which I am changing tomorrow. Someone mentioned it might be the computer, but the car drove awesome before I swapped everything on the ignition. Even with the rotor not having any dang metal left on it! Now it runs worse than it did before. Any one else have this problem? What's the first place to look? Plug wires? I didn't see them arcing ANYWHERE...but they look original, at 150K miles...

I don't know about the surging but I had a similar problem with the engine seeming to "cutout" when I
had the cruise enabled. In my case, it was the spastic speedometer. Everytime the speedo cutoff
and dropped to "0", so did the engine. When the speedo kicked back in you'd get a surge as the
cruise tried to get the car back up to speed. It
probably wouldn't hurt to reflow the solder joints
on the speedometer to see if that doesn't correct your problem.
