1989 325ix antilock/brake problems... (archive)

I have just purchased a '89 325ix. When starting the car the brake indicator light flashes on the dashboard until the brake is touched. When coming to a gradual stop the brake pedal can be pushed down rather easily but then raises and stiffens up. At this point, the anti-lock brake light comes on. Does anyone know what this problem might be or how I could narrow down the possibilities.
