The master cylinder could also be suspect but since the pedal "pushes back" the booster may have a vacuum leak or other failure.

has the fluid been changed in the last 2-3 years? have the brake calipers been rebuilt in the car's lifetime?

depending upon the car's maintenence history, or lack thereof, you could be experiencing multiple problems that amplify each other.
