Most common problem with the jumping temp gauge is a faulty ground connection. Clean and tighten it and you will be good to go. 325i breaksdown as follows; 3 is your series of BMW, the actual style of your car, as opposed to a 5 or 7. the 25 is your engine displacement, 2.5 liters. the i stands for injection as opposed to an e which stands for economy or normally aspirated which has a carburator. Welcome to the world of E30's which is perhaps the best handling automobile ever made!!! Can't really comment on the check engine light. Normally the O2 sensor will cause rough idle, hard starts and poor gas mileage.

My "89 325i temp gauge will jump (from 1/4 to 1/2 way point) to 3/4 then jump back down. I know the coolant is not running hot that it is in fact the gauge. Also I am new at all this, what does the 325 mean and the "i" as well. Also, my check engine light will come on from time to time. It eventually goes out, could be 1 hour driving time or 3 minutes. Is this a bad o2 sensor?
