I have decided on purchasing a M3 for fixing up for myself and my son who will be driving in 2 yrs (he will not get this car with a new license - will have to prove himself on our 85 318i for 18 months first). So I have plenty of time to spend to work on the car and will also be able to spread the expenditures over several years. I did look at an 88' M3 today that is not in running condition (and hasn't been in over 3 years) for $4500. It has been garaged and has 170,000 miles on the odometer. It doesn't look like it was raced - no stress cracks on sub-frame or other tail tail signs of stress. No signs of significant wreck, just a slightly dented left front quarter panel with small stress fractures on front left bumper. Leather interior in ok condition. No radio. No rust problems. Engine probably needs to be replaced - 60-90#s compression in cylinders. I'm thinking more like $3000 - What do ya'll think. The seller has never seen it run, he bought it 3 years ago. Who knows what else is wrong although it does look fairly clean and cared for previously. No history. I did get Vin number for investigation if price warrants.
