I plan to leave it to a professional. I don't expect that I will find any cars locally. If I do I'm in luck because I have a friend who has wrenched just about every E30 M3 in Utah. However, I expect to have to fly somewhere to pick up a car. From previous experience, I find that pre-purchase inspections tend to gloss over minor problems like body and interior condition, focusing on mechanicals. While I agree, that the the mechanicals are the most important, I want to be able to fax an inspecting mechanic a list that covers everything. That way I can easily determine if it is worth my time to fly to wherever to purchase a vehicle.
