: : I was getting on the freeway today and I was doing 55 in third gear. All of a sudden I lost power (about 5000 rpm) and the CHECK light in the instument cluster came on. I shifted into fourth and I regained power
: any ideas?

: First thing that comes to mind is the rubber air intake boot between the AFM and air plenum. Look for cracks. Second, check the fuel pressure. You might have a pump going bad and are running it out of gas at 5k rpm.

I experienced same characteristics last summer. The power loss was accompanied by poor throttle response (blip the throttle would sometimes allow me to get the rpm's up, but if I let the clut out the power would fade) and black smoke exiting my exhaust. The problem turned out to be a loose/old coolant sensor. I had it replaced and the connection cleaned and I haven't had the problem since. Sensor is located on passenger-side near bottom of block.

Hope this helps,
