The M3 has a chain, but with 112K it really should be replaced. Changing the chain is a very expensive job around the $700-800 range I think. The water pump and thermostat tend to go around 100K so if they haven't been replaced yet it is likely that they will have to be soon. If you are thinking about getting the car make sure to take it to a good mechanic. The M3 is a reletivly expensive car to maintain so having it checked out could save you a lot of headaches.

: i'm a previous 91 318is owner and looking into getting this black 88 M3 the guys is asking 9K and 112K miles. do these have timing belts or chains? . he said he didn't change the timing "chain". i'm like if its chain then it doesn't need to be replaced right? what else to i look for, do they have that noise coming form the deferential in the back , my 318 had that noise. anything else ? thanx
