: i'm a previous 91 318is owner and looking into getting this black 88 M3 the guys is asking 9K and 112K miles. do these have timing belts or chains? . he said he didn't change the timing "chain". i'm like if its chain then it doesn't need to be replaced right? what else to i look for, do they have that noise coming form the deferential in the back , my 318 had that noise. anything else ? thanx

All M3's produced had timing chains and these must be changed at 100k if they are not and the chain snaps you're are looking at a very large repair bill!!!!! If the rear diff is whining then suspect a worn diff and these also are very exspensive to repair! I would recommend that if you are buying an M3 then have the car inspected by an expert! If you buy a dog you are talking big big bucks.....if you buy a gem you have one of the most desirable and sweet handling BMW's ever produced! Buy carefuly and I guarantee you won't be disapointed ask anybody in this forum!
