I plan on driving the car on the street as well as autocross and track on weekends. I usually drive my cars pretty hard on the street (on occasion, of course). However, I am sensible and treat cars with respect as I rely on them for transportation.

I am a mechanical engineer and I can pretty much fix anything. To me, problems are challenges, not disasters. I am just trying to get an idea of availability of parts, cost, and ease of home mechanic work. From your post, it sounds like this is do-able.

I'm still a little concerned about $5k engine rebuilds and $1500 timing chains, but I also understand that the E30 M3 is somewhat of a hybrid race/street car. No problem, but this usually means extra $$$.
