: Do you guys recomend using synthetic oil on a 88 M3.
: A mechanic told me it might mess up the gaskets.

When I got mine (1991 M3 108,000),in somewhat rough shape, I switched to Syntex 5-50. I have since put 27,000 mile on it no problem and no leaks. I use about 1 quart every 5000 mile, of course that is when I change it every 5000 miles that is. I don't know how many miles you have on your car, but I'll ask the guys that Maintain my car at Active AutoWerke here in Miami. I am sure they have seen damn near everything. Hell! You can ask them for their opinion. Their phone number is (305) 233-9300 ask for Mike or Karl. They are good guys with a ton of experience on M3's.
