I had a problem close to this last year. It was a short in a main power wire connector under the dash. The car would just die like I shut it off, but the starter would still turn. To see if it is something similar check two things the next time it happens. See if the fuel pump (the one under the hood)is working when the key is on. You should be able to hear it ticking. I suggest first listing for it when the car is working so you know what to listen for if it dies. The second thing to check is if you have spark. Pull a plug (or better yet carry an extra!) and hook it to one of the wires. Ground it somewhere you can see it and crank the car. These tests won't solve the problem but they will narrow it down quite a bit as to what can cause it. If both spark and fuel are gone I would look for a short in a main power lead or a bad anti-theft code relay. I don't have a wiring diagram but I think the main power leads are light green. These power the brain which controls the rest except the starter. This is also what the anti-theft code does too, cuts the brain's power but not the starter. If the starter won't turn either then I would look at electrical components higher up on the food chain. The thing that really sucks is that if it's like the problem I had you can't find it until it dies. Remmeber to leave yourself an out when in traffic. Being a rolling roadblock is hell on the ticker. Good luck and let me know what you find.
