Well I had similar problems right at that rpm. When i would hit 3k the car would hesitate a little and then go. I replaced everything. so many parts including the timing chain and retensioner and all to no avail. then the oil pan came off and a spun crank shaft and broken rod bearings did appear. The weird thing is, that aside from that hesitation the car ran great. Needless to say, I went for the 2.5 and all is well now. If you take the valve cover off you can get a pretty good look at your timing chain to see if it is worn or stretched. also look at the guide rails cause they wear out and cause a slapping noise. just so you know, those rails are not cheap. somewhere in the $500 range. Good luck, and keep your head up (refering to the shity emails you get.)

: i am curious if it coyuld possibly be a timing cahin prob.. my car has a horrible wine/clanking at 3100 rpm.. it is real percise on the rpm whre the noise is.. yet i cant really put a finger on it yet.. i am hoping you e30m3 guys can help.. i am hoping you can tel me how to check the timing chain.. i only hav 53000 miles but still.. am help is more than appreshiated..
