We have recently been through this problem with the E34 M5 message group. It seems some people with aftermarket chips (Dinan or JC) were getting pinging. The most likely scenario is that your engine is just not quite right for that particular chip. The engines in the M5 and the M3 are very similar, are highly tuned as they come from the factory, and there is little room for improvement. What an aftermarket chip tuner has to play with is a range of possibilities for a bunch of individually unique engines, and he/she must apply changes to give the best advantage for the maximum number of users. Unfortunately, some people have engines that fall outside the specs the tuner has chosen to work with, and bingo: you get problems. Several M5 owners were surprised at the amount of pinging they heard when they had their cars on the dyno, where you could here it without road/wind noise.

The only solution is to try a different chip (different manufacturer, different generation, whatever). The ideal solution is to go see someone like Jim Conforti and have him create a custom chip with your car on the dyno.

Just my thoughts/ideas.

: Hmmm, I didn't think our timing was adjustable.
