I'm using 215/40-17 up front on 7.5" E36 M3 wheels. Out back, 245/35-17 on 8.5" wide. 15mm H&R spacers all around. I get a tiny bit of rubbing on the drivers side front with the wheel turned sharply, like backing out of a garage, but no rubbing during actual driving. My inner fender liner is cracked on that side, so the tire may just be rubbing that. You won't have any problems with 17 x 8's if they have the correct offset, or with spacers if they don't. Run 215/40-17, 225/40-17 or 235/40-17. These are all fairly close to the overall diameter of the stock wheel setup - the 215/40's being almost spot on. Good luck with your upgrade, 17's really improve the handling of the E30 M3 quite a bit - at least in my case anyway.
