The exact thing happened to me. When I purchased my '88 M3 I could not figure out why the temp read -22 F. I just assumed the temp sensor was dammaged, even though I live in Canada, it was NOT that cold. Anyways, I got a flat a couple weeks back and while the car was jacked up I had a look underneath and sure enough there were two wires dangling from under the driver's side bumper area. It was a matter of simply plugging them together and VOILA, the temperature readout was working again. Hope this helps.
