When shutting-off the engine, do so with the clutch disengaged (i.e. the pedal pressed-in), and the tranny in neutral. Secure the car with the parking brake, then let-out the clutch. If you're on a downhill slope (the nose lower than the rear of the car), you can engage 1st gear for extra security -- if uphill, you can engage reverse.
There seems to be a particular sensitivity of the hydraulic tensioner to even a tiny bit of reverse rotation of the driveshaft, such as can occur when shutting off the motor on even the slightest incline. When I follow the above procedure, I never get the "diesel" noise -- try it yourself, and let us know.
BTW, I did not invent this -- credit should go to Dr. Elihu Savad (sp?) for noticing that the above procedure seems to eliminate the problem.
