: : : When shutting-off the engine, do so with the clutch disengaged (i.e. the pedal pressed-in), and the tranny in neutral. Secure the car with the parking brake, then let-out the clutch. If you're on a downhill slope (the nose lower than the rear of the car), you can engage 1st gear for extra security -- if uphill, you can engage reverse.
: : : There seems to be a particular sensitivity of the hydraulic tensioner to even a tiny bit of reverse rotation of the driveshaft, such as can occur when shutting off the motor on even the slightest incline. I have the diesel noise as well, and thanks Angus and Troy for your answers. I have been staying round my Girlfriends a lot an the car has been parked on quite a steep Camber, where as normaly it's on a flat surface in my garage. I will try the clutch thing and let you know, as well as getting the tensioner replaced and chain checked.
