: I have an 89 M3, with ellipsoids. I was planning on replacing the ellipsoid low beams and high beams with a set of higher quality CIBIE sealed beams. I just discovered however, that the ellipsoids have a special mounting bracket that they screw onto, and that the CIBIE sealed beams will not work with this bracket. Is there any way I can purchase the sealed beam bracket and use it in place of the ellipsoid bracket? Will it fit? Also, will the bracket for the sealed beams accept any sealed beam light as long as it is the right size? Most importantly, what are the part numbers for the sealed beam brackets? Thanks in advance.

Jeff:

You need to get a pair of standard headlight
carriers as the ellipsoid carriers are much different. Go to a junk yard and buy a pair of
std headlight assemblies and be sure to get the
3-wire plugs that the bulbs plug into! The Ellip's
use a different plug as well. Once you have these
parts, it's a simple matter of removing the ellipsoid carriers/bulbs, cutting off the ellipsoid electrical connectors, mounting the std carriers w/Cibie's and wiring in the std plugs. Be sure to solder the std plugs in and use good quality shrink tubing and electrical tape to insulate the solder connections.
