Ducts pose no real problems, just don't drive in water up to them, some people recommend taping them over if there is a lot of water but it isn't really needed. As far as rocks and the like go to a hardware store and get some kind of fine mesh screen to put over the ducts and paint it black. I have one and you almost can't see it if you don't know it is there. It will keep out the worst of the rocks and such. I have had no problem with my ducts at all.
