The cd should be thought of as another tool.
There are a variety of manuals out there and it helps to have them all and places like this forum. The shop manual does not have torque specs, brett's cd has them. The haynes is good for e30 related items (no m3). There is the ETM, the BMW small torque book, even chilton's. I'm probably missing some. If you just went by the shop manual, you would think that you needed to buy BMW Special Tool 00 304 etc., which of course, you usually don't.

dave, if you don't have a spark plug socket in your tool kit, do you know how much that socket costs? how about machined spacers for those new wheels? How many miles on your car? Is it time for that $$ timing chain?

BMW parts are expensive. i wouldn't use any aftermarket. Even 2002 parts can be pricey. Maybe you should rethink what you've just purchased.

: I can't advocate software piracy since I'm in the industry, but I think "get a job" has a valid point about the next out-of-the-blue maintenace or repair that you might need. These are old cars and need a lot of TLC and maintenance.

: As far as the CD is concerned, I think it sucks. It can help the avarage guy who wants to tinker a bit in the garage but it definitely hasn't any value for someone who's into doing serious work.

: So having said that, does anyone know where I might be able to get a real service/shop manual for our beloved cars?

: Kev
