well what you fixed was someone else's screw up is what you did.that brass screw is used to set base idle when the idle speed control valve is in its central position,allowing the computer to actuate the icv both further open and closed to control the idle.to set it properly you jumper the three wires at the throttle switch together this tells the computer to go to 50% duty cycle on the icv and you then set the base idle using the brass colored screw you mentioned .so somebody had screwed the one on your car in to far and the icv could not compensate causing idle problems.
