NEW YORK (APBnews.com) -- Five years after the elimination of the national speed limit, debate still simmers among traffic engineers over how fast motorists should be allowed to drive.

Some experts maintain that speed kills: They say that more people are apt to die as the speed limit increases. But others argue that, on some roads, lower speed limits may be dangerous, not the other way around.

The announcement in April by U.S. Transportation Secretary Rodney Slater stating that traffic fatality rates are at an all-time low, despite the rise in speed limits nationwide, is adding fuel to the fire.
