I may have this problem too. I can shake my engine back and forth a little more than an inch. No squeaking though, but it shouldn't move that much, should it.

We installed brand new mounts in my buddy's car. Even then there's still some side-to-side movement which I now believe is normal. What you don't want is front-to-rear movement. I believe that is how the motor mounts for our 4 cylinder cars work.
If there is squeaking your subframe may be cracked.

6 cylinder mounts are altogether different and don't allow that side to side play. Just in case you're comparing it to your buddy's 325i or something.
