One or two bearings worn causing the main shaft to rattle when it spins. You'll need to crack open the gearbox to tell which one's but it's very easy to tell. The parts cost me about 100 because I got a couple of other bits while I was at it and my mechanic took about 4-5 hours. BTW if you only just began noticing the rumbling noise then there's a lot of life left in the 'box, so it's not very urgent. In any case, it won't take long for the noise to come back at another bearing - almost all M3's make this noise at idle with clutch out. Mine was making it in first and second gear on the go!!!
