I've recently purchased a '91 e-30 M3. While under hard braking, the steering column area behind the steering wheel has a slight shake and rattle noise.

Any ideas as to what is causing this to happen?

Thanks for the reply. I thought about warped brakes too, but the front has new rotors & pads w/ <500 miles. I'll have to look into the control arms & bushings but isn't 44k miles on an unmodified M3 a little premature for control arm & bushing failure?
