I'm thinking that the power that gets sapped when the fan cuts in is gonna be more than the efficiency you gain from running at a lower temp - you know how the revs drop when the fan comes on? Also, it sounds to me like the first stage of your two-stage fan wasn't working if it only used to cut in at the 3/4 mark. Usually the slower setting kicks in at just over 1/2 and then speeds up at 3/4. Personally, I would do away with the switch altogether and put a manual one in the cockpit for use in traffic.
