I am currently looking at a 1988 M3 whose front spoiler is not the same on either side of the license plate. On the driver's side there is a black grille next to the fog light, while on the passenger side there is a body colored access panel. I don't believe this is normal. Is something missing and if so is it available to replace. Thanks.
the drivers side is the air intake for the US cars. most cars here in the US have black covers on both sides of the headlights.
on the European cars, they use a different air box and the intake hole is covered with those body colored pannels. this creates a higher pressure area behind the front bumper giving the car cool dense air.
the EVO airbox (common upgrade for US cars) doesn't do very much if you don't replace the front covers with the european ones (the passenger side cover you described is the european verson.)
I don't know why the guy would replace one and not the other, i would like to replace my black covers for the european ones, they look smoother in my opionion.
hope this helps
