My '89 M3 has 55k miles, and my engine rattles at startup as well. I would say the chain rattles 1 out of every 5 times I start up the car. The rattle goes away after a few seconds though. Should I really attempt to replace the tensioner this soon? I don't mind the rattle that much, but I am very afraid that the tensioner or chain will fail and I will have to rebuild my engine because of it. I am close to having the tensioner replaced just in case, but would rather not spend the money if it is really not needed.
