Charley you are right on! I've been M3 shopping for 2 months now and have seen 3 88 M3s all under 55K miles and great condition for $17k-$18k. Unfortunately haven't moved fast enough on any of them. There will be more, you can count on it!

Yes, while your car has only 49k miles on I think your asking price is too high. I have been looking at M3s for more than 2 years on a constant basis and see cars with lower mileage comprable in condition for less than $20000.I think a reasonable asking price for your car would be the 18k-20k range. People looking to buy an M3 may as well look at the E36 for the money to horsepower ratio, but some people want the E30. In that case there are many many other nice M3s for sale that can be found for under 20k easily. You may find the right buyer for that price but I doubt it. The people in Cali are paying a lot for their M3s, I bought my first one with 78k miles for 10.5k and it was a nice car. Not trying to insult, just my opinion.
