A few years my new 318ti. So there I was driving on a Friday night to my favorite socially inept place; the movie theater. I decided to take the scenic route, Santiage Canyon road (well out of my way) because I enjoyed the twisty fun that this little car had to offer. On route a little Riceboy convoy came up behind me. I suppose after seeing a base model BMW they thought they might finally be able to beat one? Well, unfortunately for them I was not a street racer. However I thought i might have MY fun and enjoy this road on this Friday night in this car that i loved. I believe they took this as some sort of challenge. As the straight bits of the road came i slowed down to the speed limit (there's no fun in speeding in a straight line). Of course they tailgate me and do their disco flouerscent light show. The next twisty bit would come and i'd get on it again. The next straight section and they were right behind me with their lights. I believe the law here in CA states that if somebody is behind you flashing the lights and there is room for you to pull over on the shoulder to give room, you must do so. So i did. Did they pass me? No, they just stayed there waiting for me to get back on. Eventually i got nervous and figured these chaps were not looking for a race but some sort of physical confrontation. What did i do wrong? Eventually a right hand turn lane came up. My options: Keep going straight further away from civilization and possibly friendly police officers willing to help the bimmer guy by giving the ricers tickets. Go right into some neighborhood where i might get cornered...or turn around. Unfortunately it was one lane either way (except for the small right hand turn lane) w/ a "No U-Turn sign". I indicated over into the right hand turn to about 20mph and cranked the wheel left and applied the hand brake. This was enough to rotate the car in quick order into the opposite lane...a 180 degree spin (in my opinion: Safe U-Turn). Riceboy 1 tried to do the same by simply cranking his wheel (so it appeared in my rear view mirror). Instead he understeered across the road w/ his FWD car and came to a stop. His Schumacher buddy behind in the Nissan 200SX Primera BTCC-lookalike was attempting to turn around as well only to swerve suddenly right to avoid his friends. Result: Two rice cars in the middle of the road at odd angles and a 318ti booking it the other way. Unfortunately an old lady in a mid 80's station wagon (going the same direction as me after the U-turn) was not able to haul her 4000lb+ beast to a stop prior to beaming the ricers into the next time zone :(. I could see her heading towards them at a great rate and only heard the brakes applied. At this point i rounded the mild turn and couldn't see them anymore in the mirrors.. I did hear the impact though. I was thrilled.

At this point the adrenaline was pumping from my rather immature maneuver. Instead of going to the movies i went home. I didn't think i was in a good state to drive. I did call up CHP to find out if an accident did in fact occure. The dispatcher said that it did. I returned to the scene due to immense guilt. No, i didn't go to claim body count and put a killboard up on my fender...The result of the accident: The lady was able to avoid the Nissan Primera Touring Car but wasn't able to avoid the Civic. Sent the driver out of his window (open window w/ no seat belt) about 20 yards down the street. After seeing him i was SHOCKED that he only escaped with scratches. The passenger side door was in bad shape...Believe it or not his wife was in the car. WiFE?? yes Wife...this street racer liked to keep his pregnant wife present. HOw sad is that? He seemed to not really care...i was surprised. After i gave my story the cop (rude) left and the civic driver had the audacity to say "well, we had our fun right? Insurance will handle everything now". Right.

$17,000 later and even more in insurance rates...I wish i'd have turned around and properly finished off the poor old woman's job. NEVER RETURN TO THE SCENE OF THE ACCIDENT. You are right ///MStein, Riceboys will get you one way or another...They may be stupid but for some reason tricky. Rice certainly knows how to play the insurance game.

I hope you get over your incident. If you want my opinion keep that beautiful E30 in your garage for weekend drives/track events. Buy a beater car for day to day driving to decrease the possibility of getting in trouble with the E30. My two cents...
