A European Car article about a year ago talked at length about VINs and when cars were built and sold. According to that author's research, '88 M3s were being sold as late as '91 as NEW cars.

It appears that BMW may not have been building cars in sequence since it's unlikely a completed car would have sat around for as long as three years anywhere in the supply network. Since these cars were not exactly regular production-line items, and considering the way these things got sold here, I'd go with first-registration dates or bills-of-sale if I were trying to establish the age of a vehicle.

What I'm saying is that VIN sequence may NOT be a reliable indicator of when a car was built.
