I had to do the same replacement. The switch is above the clutch slave cylinder on left side of trans/engine.One trick is to remove the clutch slave to get clear access to the back up switch. Be carefull. The switch body is aluminum and can be cross threaded very easily. As you put it in the pin will push it back out. Don't overtighted. Good luck without a lift its impossible.

Hey folks, when I put my 90 M3 into reverse and back up the driveway at night, I notice its very dark.
I was wondering if there is any specific switch or something I can replace to fix this problem.
I looked from outside the car once and the white lenses light up but with no real brightness.

Most likely it is the backup light switch. The bad news is that it is attached to the transmission. It's on the left side towards the top front of the tranny, you need to have smallish hands to reach it. I can't remember what the socket size was, 19mm? or so. Simply replacement but it can be a pain in the *ss unless you do it on a lift.
