I paid $9300 for a 1980 911SC that was in good shape and just needed about $1000 of work in cosmetics. I have also owned a '66 and '92 as well as an E36 M3. I haven't owned an E30 M3 but am currently looking for one now! I believe that you need to drive both cars. They are so different that it will be easy for you to decide. If you like the 911 the decision will be easy! When buying a 911 don't worry about the mileage but have a qualified shop do a prepurchase inspection! My '80 had over 150K and ran perfectly! You will suffer a little in the heat as the a/c systems up until 1987 are pretty pathetic.
