The 911 is very expensive for the performance you get. A good example, say an 80 911 SC is going for 15K, but porsche was still trying to sort out emission issues and the sc have CIS injection and it just doesn't perform. You can remove this, install webers and an early 911 exhaust and this car is now a serious performace machine....but it will not pass inspection. Refer to Bruce Anderson's book "performance porsche 911 handbook" it goes through all the 911's performance mod's.

The "new" carrara (84-89) will run 20k at least for a good example and frankly its performance is only good based on todays standards (0-60 @ 6sec and 1/4 @ mid 14's).

The 944 turbo S is based and the 944 european firehawk series and is a great performance value. It is the fastest porsche of the 80's (including the 930). Tough to find but porsche panorama has 3-6 of them each month for about 15K. The engine is solid and will handle 300hp will little difficultly. Stock it puts out 250 hp. $300 chip puts it up to 300hp and it should, peformance wise, go heads up with any porsch (not the TT of course), bmw, audi, vet (minus the z06)... new, used, or otherwise. And that includes the e46m....
