Remember, I'm thinking of a 10K M3 and probably a 15K 911.

For that money.. you'll be looking at an 88 M3 with maybe high miles.
And as far as a 911, you'll be looking at an SC series 78-83 for that price range. (3.0l @180hp)
I've owned a 74 911 (highly modified) and now a 91 M3. I would say it all comes down to how much room you need.
The M3 has a big trunk and can carry 4 people.
The 911 has very little trunk and is really a 2 seater. Both will do ok in winter with snow tires. And both will do great on the track with a few preperations. So it is a difficult choice.

My experience says that both are similar in maintenence costs, and insurance. They feel similar in performance, although to get the most out of the porsche it takes practice learning it's limits (heavy ass), and the M3 is easy to approach its limits.
Both give great driver feed back, make great sounds, and are a blast to drive.

I'd spend a little more and get a lower milage M3.
(or even more and get a carrera series 911 84-89.
These had 3.2l @205hp and had motronic FI)

So i gave up my porsche for more room and usability, but have replaced it with a car of equal competence and heritage, and with modern engine management.
