Most engines are different for different parts of the world. Engines manufactured for the north american market usually make less hp than engines for other parts of the worlds becasue of emission reguirements and the low quality gas available here.

With the exception of the Evo2 & 3 engines, the European M3 engine (Evo1) only had a different exhaust. The ECU has two different grounding points that can be used to select one of four different programs--With cat & O2 sensor, without cat, high octane gas w/o cat, and one more I can't remember. The only other S14 engine I believe is the Italian "tariff beater" engine--a 2.0L de-stroked engine, 192hp without cat, found in the E30 320is in Italy.
