If the shims are baked in a carbuerizing atmosphere, then the entire surface of the shim would be case-hardened. If they're just ground from steel that's already hardened, then they're still hard, through and through.I don't see any problem with reusing them, just make sure they're really flat. Measure them in several places with your micrometer and compare.
