What this mod will do:
FogLights will work when the parking lights (at least, also in low and high beam) AND ignition are BOTH on.
This is very simple to do and only involes making one cut and one splice of the factory wiring. Makes it easy to reverse.
Don't be discouraged by the length of the instructions - I wanted to be as clear and thorough as possible the first time.
Parts you need:
1) relay and carrier and wiring ***NOTE*** Do NOT use the foglight relay for this, it has a diode inside.
I bought a alarm relay kit from the installation shop at circuit city for $13 - includes averything you need in pre- assembled form.
2) 2 spade clips
3) 3M wire tap
This is on my '87 Cabrio should be very similar on all other e30s
Steps
1) disconnect battery ground connection
2) disconnect wiring from back of foglight switch
ON some years there is a brown wire and 2 wires - use the wire PAIR (mine is yellow/brown) and on others there is a brown and another wire, use the other wire. In either case, DO NOT CUT the brown wire!
3) if there are 2 wires coming out of a single connector (as on mine) if not got to step 4)
a - cut them both leaving ~1.5 inches on each wire or so on the
switch side
b - on the car side connect the 2 wires you just cut together and cover splice with wire nut or elect. tape
c - tape off one of the wires on the switch side (this wire can be used for rear foglights if desired)
skip to step 5)
4) For cars with only one wire coming out cut it (again not the brown one) and tape off the end on the harness side.
5) Locate the wire(s) for the Parking Lights coming out of the HeadLamp switch (on my car they are grey/yellow and grey/white) using the 3m wire tap - connect the wire from the foglight switch that you just cut to either of these wires (it doesn't matter which one)
6) Plug the harness back into the switch
7) You are finished with the work under the dash, replace the lower cover.
8) In the fuse box under the hood locate and remove the relay for the foglights (on mine it is relay K8)
9) Remove the screw under this relay and the other wire diagonally opposite it to gain access to the under side
(just to feed wires in from outside the fuse box alternatively you can just feed them in from above.)
If using the relay kit skip to step 11
10) Attach sufficient wire to terminals 30, 85, 86 and 87 on your relay see next to determine length
11) Feed the wires from terminals 86 and 87 into the fuse box, I used the upper rubber grommet and then fed them up through the fuse panel through the empty relay socket (near fuse 1)
12) Attach the spades to the end of each of these wires
13) Insert the spade from terminal 86 wire into the terminal 86 slot of the foglight relay plug - Use the diagram on the relay you removed to determine which one this is.
14) Insert the spade from terminal 87 wire into the terminal 87 slot of the foglight relay.
15) Route the wires neatly and remove any slack, pulling excess back out of fuse box.
16) Reassemble fuse box.
17) Connect the terminal 30 wire to the auxiallary fuse that is switched by the ignition key (or any other SWITCHED power source under the hood)
18) Connect the terminal 85 wire to ground.
19) If you have a wire for terminal 87a tape off or cut off - you don't need it.
Reconnect the negative cable on the battery.
Test your lights.
- With ignition off, you should have no foglights even if the parking lamps are on.
- With ignition on, you should have foglights only if the headlamp switch is pulled out to at least the parking lamp position.
