Darren is right the cats rob about 5 hp or so, But don't be tempted to lose all of the back pressure from the system as this will lose torque.
What a car needs is steady veloicity and a steady pressure gradient from the collector onwards. You do not need to worry too much about development as NMW has done it for you. I do not know of any system that replaces the cat free exhaust that offers significant gains, a copuple of Bhp here and there. Even a full group A exhausts does next to nothing for the stock motor (It was designed around a modded group A engine....)
My advice is to fit a good cat replacement centre section and an appropriate bback box that is not too loud (Or even leave the stok box on). A supersprint centre section will do the job nicely, not sure I know af any other good systems in the UK.
DO NOT FIT A SYSTEM THAT REMOVES THE CROSSOVER SECTION AT THE START OF THE SYSTEM. The standard and aftermarket exhausts have a joint where the two pipes from the headers merge together before seperating and continuing down to the centre and rear box. This peice defines the end of the headers and creates pressure waves for the tuned exhaust. Remove this and there is no crossover point and you are looking at a 4-2 exhaust (Ughhh) rather than the desired 4-2-1.
The net result will be lost hp and torque.....
