funny noise from engine Help! (archive)

while cleaning the snow off my car from the snowstorm here in NY, the engine was idling and all of a sudden this sound which sounds like air coming out of the engine started..Then the engine started to stumble and nasty fumes started coming out of the exhaust. What can this be? Will it be OK to drive to my mechanic? thanks in advance.
