Which NC dealership quoted this? If you're in the Charlotte, NC area I can provide the name of a reputable shop in lieu of the dealer to have your car worked on...

I wouldn't pay that price as you can find a good used transmission or have yours rebuilt elsewhere for ALOT less money than that...

I only use the dealer for proprietary BMW parts (few of those) that I can't source elsewhere quicker and cheaper.

If you go the rebuild route, I'd look into regearing #2 & #3 gears with shorter gears for better acceleration and perhaps getting a taller #5 gear for the highway.

While I've never done this, I would think you get better acceleration around town & better gas mileage on the highway. Look to a professional BMW shop (Metric Mechanic) or a reputable tuner (Korman or Turner) for suggestions...

I have a 1988 M3 and my manual tranmission has suddenly started becoming increasingly difficult to get into reverse. I have taken the car to my local BMW dealership in North Carolina and they investigated and told me that my "synchros were worn out and that they would need to ship my transmission back to the factory to be rebuilt". The price tag for this was in the $4200 - $5000 price range. Does this sound reasonable? Do you think something else could be causing my problem?
