In Reply to: E30 M3 Club Racers out there! Advise Please! posted by Patrick Fitzgerald on January 17, 2001 at 10:35:03:
I am considering entering club racing in 18-24 months or so, and want to try to set out a budget for my first season. I would imagine it would be more cost effective to acquire an already-race modified car, instead of buying a cheap M3 and modifying to race-spec myself. I have seen some club racers in Roundel for $17K-$20K, so I figure that there is at least $10K worth of safety and performance equipment in there. If someone with club racing experience can help me out here that would be appreciated.
I set the 18-24 month time frame in order to learn more from drivers schools (I have done 7 and plan to do 1 every 6 weeks or so this year) and have enough time to properly prepare a car.
Any other advise is appreciated.
I was in the same boat just recently. I decided to go for the racing instead of just doing schools. I won't be starting until this June, my rookie race, but I have been spending a lot of time working on my car and getting things together. I bought a car that was already prepared and well sorted but the thing I've found with every used BMW I've ever bought is that my standards are much higher than those of the previous owner. I have spent much time and effort (although not too much $$$) reworking things in this particular car. I paid a bit too much for the car but I wanted it then so I paid a little premium for the timing. Glad I did it too. Anyway, where are you located? I'll email you privately and give you my phone number so we can chat...it's easier. BTW, I met Jefrem and his opinions/information are well regarded and on the money.
