Barry, I've not done either one of these scenarios but I was under the impression that all E36 M3 engines had more torque/h.p. than the S14 (as much as I love it) correct me if I'm wrong. But if that was true then I couldn't say that the M50 would be pointless (especially if it was time for a rebuild anyway). Now, if you didn't need a rebuild but just wanted a hellacious power to weight ratio then the S50 seems awfully comparable to the 2.5 conversion. Even if it cost a couple grand more you'd have more H.P. wouldn't you? If anyone has done these conversions please feel free to educate me.

Well I have yet to find an E36 M3 S50 engine for under $6K. All the tuners and yards are grabbing them up. So you'd have to find/pay for the engine itself and then do the M50/S50 conversion to get it installed in the E30 body. Let's say 2K more (conservatively). You're looking at 8K for 240HP and improper weight distribution. If you go with the 2.5 or 2.6 S14, you're getting custom pistons, stroker crank, rods perhaps?, camshafts, ported horns, ported head, Group A header, etc etc to put out 238-260HP, you're looking at around $5-7K for a completely rebuilt S14 with slightly more HP than the used S50 for less cost and proper weight distribution.

OK the M50 conversion is awesome. Man the tourque and power iss phenominal you can get a motor for around 4 grand then installation is about 5 and u are looking at about the cost of an engine rebuil of an m3 s14 motor. Let me tell you that if you want to do this you will love it, aplace in indiana does them very well, i can giv eyou info if you would like. THe only thing is that you should have a pretty good suspension on the car for this, write me if yyou need info
Tom
