Replacement of te balljoints only applies to non-M E36 cars. The aluminum control arms for the E30 do not have replaceable joints. I think the steel arms have replaceable joints. But the cost of two balljoints, plus the hassle of removal/reinstallation of the control arm does not justify saving $20 per side. I'd rather pay the extra cash and not have to worry about damaging the arms in the press. And how much of a pain is it to press them out/in?

Sure, you can also replace the boots only, but this requires dismantling of the suspension. I'd only worry about it if the part was brand new and you manage to damage a boot long before the life of the joint is up. If the boot broke just 100 miles ago, it might already be too late. The joints are lined with teflon or some sort of really hard plastic-like material. The stuff just plain wears out after a while. That's why new joints are too tight to move by hand and old joints flop around like John Bobbit.
